Balkan cinema

Tuesday, December 3 / 7 p.m

At the initiative of media and performance artist Branko Milisković, in cooperation with the Saša Marchet Foundation, we are starting a series of talks that will be held in the historic building of the Balkan Cinema.

The first conversation will be between artists Uroš Djurić and Branko Milisković. The topics of the conversation will include questions about the status of independent artists, as well as the challenges that this group of artists faces over a long period of time. The discussion will include the process of forming an artist, including studio preparation, academic education and career as an independent artist, as well as all the obstacles, challenges and problems inherent in this vocation, such as issues of employment, sick leave, the possibility of raising loans, retirement and the like. The interlocutors will look at the complex process “from idea to realization” of the project and the challenges that artists face, especially when they do not have institutional support. Also, the importance of the consistency of the competition policy of the Ministry of Culture and the Secretariat for Culture of the City of Belgrade will be discussed.

This initiative aims to establish a public conversation as a platform for understanding the position of independent artists; through the use of dialogue in research and recording of problems that arise from administrative, professional to the regulation of competition policy and equal rights. In this domain, the Foundation aims to support artists to share their observations and challenges, especially regarding the existential consequences and possibilities of creative work in an environment that is often not conducive to understanding, this conversation therefore relies on creating a context that will contribute to building respect for individuals who create and take responsibility for their independence.

Bioskop Balkan – a space for contemporary art, also has an obligation to share part of the responsibility and to put in the spotlight current events that will move from social networks to the field of dialogue that will offer solutions, instead of further deepening the misunderstanding between different actors in culture.

We listen: what do artists have to tell us?
