About us

Bioskop Balkan: Space for Contemporary Art is a project space located in a historic 19th-century building in the city center, which once served as a cinema, hosting the first operas, musicals, and theater performances in Belgrade. Today, this authentic setting remains a vibrant gathering place for artists and audiences, functioning as an independent cultural center.

As a protected heritage site and cultural monument, Bioskop Balkan is closely aligned with the Foundation Saša Marčeta in a joint effort to support artists and enrich the contemporary art scene by providing both gallery space and financial and organizational backing. Engaging with the dynamic landscape of contemporary art, we collaborate with local art institutions, academies, students for their annual exhibitions, and artist associations. We also extend invitations to artists, curators, and art theorists from both local and international circles to participate in our initiatives, share their expertise with our board, or serve as advisors to our team.

In recent years, exhibitions held at Bioskop Balkan and supported by the Saša Marčeta Foundation have received notable recognition. In 2022, the City of Belgrade awarded Aleksandar Denić’s exhibition “Decade” as the Best Exhibition of the year. In 2023, Gordana Kaljalović Odanović was honored with the “Politika” award for Best Exhibition for her presentation “Free Flight: Maga Magazinović, Through Temporal and Spatial Dispersion,” which was held in March at Bioskop Balkan and organized by the Saša Marčeta Foundation. We also take particular pride in our collaboration with Aleksandar Denić during the preparations for Exposition Coloniale at the Venice Biennale, Serbian Pavilion – Giardini (2024). This partnership provided unique insights, and we shared these experiences with our audience, receiving powerful and meaningful feedback.

Bioskop Balkan remains committed to fostering creativity and serving as a bridge between tradition and modernity, ensuring that both established and emerging artists have a space to explore and showcase their work, while continuously engaging the community in meaningful cultural dialogue.
