The story follows the relationship between a married couple, Johann, a professor of applied psychology, and his wife Marijana, a divorce lawyer. Although everything seems idyllic and orderly, viewed from the side, Bergman exposes the cracks and hidden disharmony of the couple by which he reflects his own experience of a thirty-year marriage.
