The exhibition Thank You, Raša Todosijević
The exhibition Thank You, Raša Todosijević—Grateful Serbia, represents a unique showcase of his works ranging from those created in the late 1970s up to the recent watercolours from 2019. The selected artworks were initiated through significant international museum setups. Displacing them from the safety zone of the institutional integrity of museums to a private-public exhibition space opens up a delicate field of (non)acceptance and possible, desired critical judgement by the public and audience. It is an intended effect, an expected reaction to the works— some of which were recognized more than 40 years ago— that are, even today, equally provocative. Stemming from an urban, metropolitan position as the artist’ response to everything that was surrounding or touching him, within the peculiarities of the present times, they obtain a novel recognition.
Balkan Banquet—a swastika formed from 17 tavern tables covered with black tablecloths, with remains of cooked beans, bread and beer, occupies the central position of the former cinema Balkan hall. After a dinner with the invitees, music and drink, the food leftovers become part of the exhibition setup, along with the watercolours created as designs for graphics, a Fuxus piano, video and photo records of Was its kunst, Marinela Koželj? and, as the central motif though not exhibited, the photograph of Marinela (from the exhibition at the Student Cultural Centre, titled Drangularijum, from 1971), promoted both on the catalogue’s front cover and in one of the texts by Stevan Vuković.
